Masquerade Lesson 2

Masquerade Lesson 2

Several things that cause us to wear masks

People wear different masks every day, depending on their situation or circumstances. Judas, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples wore a mask of deception, as he sold Jesus out for a bag of coins while pretending to love and follow him.
Read Matthew 26:14-16.

God never pretends to be who he is not. The bible constantly tells us of God’s love and strength and kindness. God would not be happy with us pretending to be who we are not.

Circle the words you identify with, that relate to you putting on your different masks:

Hurt Intimidation Anger
Hate Unforgiveness Protection
Trust Bullying Greed
Fear Spiritual Pretence
Pity Regret Shame
Death Rejection Divorce
Love Choices Alcohol
God Betrayal Respect
Hide Weakness Strength
Love Insecurity Rules
Failure Suspicion Unworthy
Pain Guilt Vulnerability
Sin Loneliness Thoughts
Pride Secrets Change

Heart to Heart

Let us discuss the above words you have chosen:

  1. How difficult do you find it to be yourself around your family and friends?
  2. If you are honest with yourself, what did you learn about yourself by the choice of words you circled above? Do you really know yourself?
  3. How do you feel when you are wearing one of these masks? Confident, real, fake or scared?
  4. If you were to continue wearing a mask, never allowing yourself to be real, what would happen to you over time?
  5. How did Judas betray Jesus? In Matthew 26:49 Judas kissed Jesus on the cheek, called the ‘Judas kiss of betrayal.’ Have any ‘friends’ betrayed you which caused you to wear a mask?
