Us to God: Worship and prayer

Start this session with song and prayer. Some weeks, you could also make time for prayer requests and ask women to share prayer items.

Me to us: Sharing

Choose one of the questions below to share your stories. If the group consists of more than eight people, divide into smaller groups.

  • Do you know someone who lived a modest life, yet made an important impact? Share about their life and impact.
  • When would you say a woman is “successful”?
  • Share how you have seen God using widows in a special way in the church.
  • Share how you have seen God using widows in a special way in the church.

God to us: Preaching

Anna the prophetess was mostly celibate.
We know little of Anna’s life and work. We know who her father was, and that she was a prophetess. We also know that she had been married for only seven years when she became a widow.

When Jesus was born she was eighty-four. This means she spent the longest part of her life in the temple, worshipping, fasting and praying. Therefore we could say that her life had been one of celibacy in order to serve God in the temple (Luke 2:36-38).

Anna the prophetess’ modest life made an impact.
Anna led a modest life, centred around the worship of God. Yet, through her modest service, she made enough of an impact that she is specifically mentioned and singled out in the Bible.

Anna the prophetess testified about Christ.
God blessed Anna for her faithfulness. She was able to see the Child Jesus and testify to the redemption that came through Him. At the age of eighty-four, she was still prophesying and witnessing to God’s redemption.

  • Anna the prophetess was mostly celibate.
  • Anna the prophetess’ modest life made an impact.
  • Anna the prophetess testified about Christ.

We to the world: Growing questions

Choose one or two of the questions below that will help the group grow in their church, community and lives.

  • How does the story of Prophetess Anna help us to reconsider widowhood and the role of widows in the church?
  • How are older women typically treated in your church and community? Looking at the story of the eighty-four-year-old prophetess Anna, what role should older women play in the church?
  • Anna’s life centred around worshipping God. Where do you see this form of self-denial your church? How is it honoured?
  • How are older women typically treated in your church and community? Looking at the story of the eighty-four-year-old prophetess Anna, what role should older women play in the church?
